[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It was such a privilege to share the Joy of Christmas with our friends at Winbourne Park. Many of the residents suffer from Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, among other things. We have embraced these residents over the last 5 years, and visit with them at least once a month.
Last night was even more special because some of our kids aged 5-12 teamed up with us, shining like stars in a place that is often filled with sadness, loneliness and depression – especially at this time of year! It was the most thrilling experience to see residents come alive as the kids greeted them with hugs, chatted with them, and helped with crafts, games and refreshments. As we sang carols together, one resident said to me, “It’s funny how I sometimes forget my name but I still remember where I was when I heard this Carol for the first time when I was 4 years old, and today you have helped me bring back childhood memories”.
Winbourne Residents and Citygaters
These are people who struggle with memory loss and disorientation, so to see genuine joy as we sang in celebration of Jesus was such a wonder. Some of the residents have lost their motor skills and it was just amazing to see our kids slot right in and help with the crafts. The result: smiles all around! We prayed with them and showered them with love. A couple of the residents asked if they could hug the kids and sit with them, to which the kids were most obliging. City Gates has become like family to the residents.
We have no control over our length of days on earth but we do have the power to choose what we do with our gift of time. Let’s be bearers of good news, helping people find and follow Jesus!
